Deekayla Thomas is a second-year Master of Social Work student at Columbia University. She is a Social Work Intern with Bridges from Borders and a substitute teacher with her local school district. These experiences have developed her interest in working with families and folks facing instability. Deekayla calls Fairburn, Georgia, “home,” and before attending Columbia University, she spent four years as a Colby College Mule. At Colby, Deekayla refined her love for studying people and critiquing the social and systemic structures impacting communities. Deekayla hopes to continue her work by helping families access resources through supportive housing initiatives and assisting communities by amplifying the needs of marginalized groups.
