Maria S. Chavan

Maria S. Chavan is a doctoral candidate in the department of Educational Leadership and Policy at the University at Buffalo. Her research examines academic mobility, gender and education, and transnational migration through ethnographic methods. She has worked extensively with migrant and refugee populations, and has taught undergraduate courses in the fields of Education, Sociology, and Gender Studies.


She has served in several roles at UB including as Assistant Director of General Education in Academic Affairs, and Coordinator in the Office of Global Health Initiatives. In North Carolina she was an adjunct professor of Curriculum and Instruction in the area of learner diversity for pre-service teachers. She coordinated a Migrant Education Program in Western North Carolina for K-12 students and collaborated with Mexico’s National Institute for Adult Education to implement a program for migrant workers. Prior to that work she served as an AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteer in Service to America) at the King Center Charter School and International Institute of Buffalo.
